Comments on "Breaking News" (大事件)

I would like to give some comments on “Breaking News” (大事件) that is a film that gives some insight of the relationship of media and society. Actually Lisa has mentioned it before in previous lecture. The story of “Breaking News” is talked about an ambulatory TV news unit live broadcasts the embarrassing defeat of a police battalion by five bank robbers in a ballistic showdown, the credibility of the police force drops near a nadir. While on a separate investigation in a run-down building, detective Cheung discovers the hideout of the rubbers. Cheung and his man have also entered the building, getting ready to take their foes out any minute. Meanwhile, in order to beat the media at its own game, Inspector Rebecca decides to turn the stakeout into a breaking news show. The film works in two clues. One is focusing the conflicts between the robbers and the police. Another one is focusing on the conflicts between the media and the police. Here I just want to talk about the conflicts of the part of media.

In the film, we can see how the media affect an institution’s operation. The media act as a channel to give messages to the public or even act as an educator. We habitually believe the images and sounds that we received from the media, which we deeply believe that it is the truth we experienced from the scene. In the film, the audience wholeheartedly believed the report of the news about the conflict between the police and the robbers. The media always make a mistake that they didn’t report the news under the context. In the film, the audience thought the police didn’t take their responsibility to protect the citizen as they saw the scene of a policeman surrendered to the robbers. However, the media haven’t considered the situation of the police and then make a conclusion that the police are disable to protect them. When the police see the news that discourages their image, they decide to strike back to the media by using the media as a tool to rebuild the image. We can see that the media can deeply affect an institution’s operation. The power of the media can build up a value, and at the same time it can destroy the faith that we believe it for a long time. The inspector in the film always repeats that the whole process of broadcasting is just a show to let the public know that HK police is capable. It points out the things that we received by the media may not be always true. No matter the media or institutions, the messages released by these organizations more or less are carried some subjective judgment. I just think that we can’t know the truth anytime unless you involved in the incident. Although we can through different channel to know more about the incidents, the channels themselves still have some blind points that mislead us.

The film has shown different media in our daily life also. Internet, sms, webcam, intercom, mobile phone etc these kinds of technologies became our part of lives. Nowadays, we are not just using the media, but using multi-media. We cannot satisfy with one media. Different media organize as a larger network to make up our lives. Not just communication but to make up our lives. The film shows us how this great network to reach the goal or to satisfy our needs. People not just desire to make the communication be more useful; the final goal is to make it to be ideal. But sometimes I think this kind of “ideal “ is a fake reality. It is just something that is artificial and hyper real to confuse the world. However, this is such a postmodern world where we are living in.
